* Pros

1- a wide range of vehicle coverage and frequent update

mobilemechanicepsom – Saturday, January 28, 2012 2:23:01 PM

I have the ds708 and brought it when it was first released, at that time i have to honestly say it very nearly went back (via there office window) however now they have the coverage sorted and the updates coming thick and fast it really is a fantastic bit of kit. If you have a smart arse phone that can act as a wireless hub then you can use the ds to access autodata online plus of course any other internet site.

2- good at Japanese domestic vehicles and Australian vehicles

Silk – 12/21/11 12:25 AM

We have been using the MaxiDas for about 18 months, and am sort of happy with it. The NZ market is very biased to used Japanese domestic vehicles, and they have done a very good in this sector. Our guys work from Australia and it also works very well on Australian vehicles… better than factory. We are a Mitsi dealership, and it is almost as good on Mitsi as our factory MUTT III.

3- good at American vehicles, like Ford

Shockwave – 08-14-2015, 06:19 AM

We have a solus ultra, ds708, Maximus 2.0 and Otc nemisys scan tool some work better than others depending on make

For American vehicles the solus shines but the German vehicles I like the Maximus 2.0
The ds708 is great for certain test like misfire on fords

Is this primarily a one make shop or for you work on any make because I will tell you bmw dealerships around me prefer auto logic to factory scan tool

4- work on OBD I car and perform well on 2003 Olds Alero

The_Eric – 01/05/12 09:29 PM

I have the MaxiDas unit on demo from the tool rep. I can say that I’ll likely opt not to buy it. One of the big reasons for me buying a tool of this caliber is to be able to use it on the wife’s OBD I car and access her ABS and airbag info. This unit will not communicate with OBD I in site of the fact that it comes with the GM 12 pin connector. Also noticed some (simple) spelling errors (like engein instead of engine). Not sure why that bugs me but it does. I plugged it into an 2003 Olds Alero and was pleasantly surprised at it’s level of accessibility. I could reprogram key fobs, reset trans adaptives, do CKP variation relearns and command several relays and widgets for testing purposes. Also had access to all live data in the BCM, SRS and ABS.

The Snap-On rep stopped by this week and made a smoking deal on a Solus Ultra. It’s supposed to be WAY faster than previous offerings and still be quite capable. I’ll have it to demo next Wednesday.

5- work well on Ford & GM cars

RWI – Posted October 01, 2013 – 05:34 AM

I’ve owned one for about a year, got it between 1200 & 1300.  Lack of battery means starting from scratch if unplugged.  Does do software updates over wifi and they are pretty frequent.  Live data has some of the best coverage I have seen for an aftermarket scan tool.  For the money is can’t be beat.  Can be a little interesting to get used to, seems like they copy the oem tool pretty closely.  I have dealer Ford & GM tools and the Autel is an exact clone for the most part.  If you do a lot of the same make but the factory scanner, if you want a general shop tool this pretty damn good.  Like others have said, no bells and whistles, no scope or trouble shooter, just good basic info.  I use this mainly for Chrysler as the factory tool is insanely expensive and I am pretty pleased with it.

6- test ok on ford diesels and BMW

Cliff – Posted October 01, 2013 – 06:26 AM

This is the only scanner I have. Just had a Denali in the shop. The owner had it at another shop in the area that uses otc products. The genysis couldn’t access the drivers seat module. The ds708 was able to not only read read the module but had good bidirectional support as well. The ford diesel coverage is very good. The gm diesel support is hit or miss. Haven’t tried dodge. The European coverage is excellent. Bmw support is great. Mine even works on pre obd2 models using the proprietary bmw connector. There is almost no tech support. I would not purchase through Asian sources. Seems those units aren’t warranted through the Autel us division. I bought mine through aes wave. Those guys are great. I have been surprised by this unit almost everyone I use it.

7- good scanner for its price

David_E39 – 07-26-2012, 09:56 PM

i don’t really rely in my scanners for obd1 cars. But to be honest the autel obd2 tool is a pretty good scanner for its price. It can only do so much and that is the reason why it us price at $1300. There is no such thing as any scanner that can do everything that’s why now days a lot of shop have more then just 1 scanner. But for the price you pay for the maxidas ds708 it is totally worth having for what it is capable of doing. Don’t want to pick on anyone or start any argument but its just my 2 cents about what i think of the scanner and i’m sure some people might disagree and some might agree but to each their own opinions.

8- NO COMPLAITS

Vssjim – 10-21-2012, 07:59 PM

I have no complaint with my MaxiDas and would pay for the update and move forward and don’t forget every scan tool will let you down at some point. Did you call customer service or use the feedback service when you had a problem. I have found the people on the customer service from Autel ok, but from Snap on not very helpful and kind of ugly when they had a problem they didn’t like to admit to it or fix it.

9- can download files to SD card with Maxidas

Shurk06_83 – 10-22-2015, 04:37 AM

maxidas might be slow if ur running the older operating system i did a big update a few weeks ago and it faster then ever

as for slow if you do a full scan of any car it will take time as the bus system on the cars computer is not very fast

and as for updates running out its not a big problem as long as some one has the new files and can post them u can download them and load them up to the sd card using the usb sd reader u got with your maxidas

If anyone needs updates i can download them and post them and help you figure out how to load them on your sd card

* Cons

1- disappointing coverage of old Japanese vehicles

Silk – 12/21/11 12:25 AM

What I’m disappointed in is coverage of older vehicles – we have all the old Japanese plugs – Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, and it works on none of them, the only OBDI it works on is Honda, it’s useless on the rest. But does Mercedes (but not my 1994 NZ new C220) and BMW.

2- Autel DS708 scanner will be locked up for IP address in wrong country

Autotunehouse – Wednesday, August 24, 2011 8:43:57 AM

Hi all, just a friendly advice do not buy DS708 from China trading companies or on internet. Only buy from dealers because Autel update software will be IP sensitive later and will lock up the scanner if the IP address is wrong country. Need to pay to unlock. And some local software are exclusive only to local dealer. If you purchase cheap online then you will have no access for local software update, for example, Holden and Australia Ford Falcon advanced software. Big difference of the local software versions. You pay for what you get and not worthy of paying more in the future to unlock the scanner or pay local dealer for exclusive software updates. That’s my friendly and honest advice for Autel MaxiDas DS708 scanner. But it’s really a good tool for diagnosis, not like other scan tools a ripp off.

3- low to load software if it’s used for a long time
Silk – 12/21/11 12:25 AM

After using the old Snap-On brick for 10 years I find it very slow to load, but everyone else seems to think it’s fast. We pay NZ$4,000 for this thing and think it’s cheap, so in the US you are getting it for small change.

4)Reviews For Autel DS708 From small mechanic shops and DIYers
Autel MaxiDas DS708 as the original autel product is a useful scanner and universal diagnostic tool with reasonable price.

It is especially advised and recommended to small mechanic shops and DIYers.

Here the following reviews is for your reference:

This is a very affordable diagnostic tool for those who own smaller shops or serious part time mechanics. I have a Solus and was tired of the outrageous update cost. Also I have a Launch X431 Diagun and am dissatisfied with its abilities and the menu is in broken English. The AUTEL DS708 however is great. It has 80% or more of the functionality of a more expensive tool. It does graphing and merging of data but there is no oscilloscope to use for waveform analysis.

Any DIYer can use this machine and make repairs with very little effort.

I love this tool, it performs as well as or even better than my Snap-on 2500. The help feature is awesome the information it provides makes finding the problems and fixing them with ease. It not only read the codes, but also allows you to perform certain active test while the vehicle is running. For the price, the features and capabilities are better than those more expensive scanners.

I’m a master technician with ten years experience as a professional tech. For the money this scanner does more than any of its competitors for a fraction of the price. It puts my snap on scanner to shame! Does almost every make and model I program keys with it, reset adaption and service lights, look at live data, run tests, etc can’t go wrong

I now use AUTEL DS708 to scan and diagnose anything from GM, FORD, CHRYSLER, BMW, MERCEDES, NISSAN, TOYOTA etc cars in my shop. This tool gave me a lot of confidence that I was able to accurately diagnose most drivability problems. For the money I can’t complain.

This is the ultimate tool for DIY mechanics. It does about 90% of what factory scanners do for any make and model. And for the price it is the best bang for the buck. Note: It does not support OBD1.

Admittedly I’ve had it for half a day, but I’ve hooked up to 5 different OBDII vehicles and I’ve had no problems with communication or sending commands. The menu is straightforward, and easy to understand.

For the price MaxiDas DS708 did everything I thought it would. It reads more codes and modules than any hand held scanner I’ve had. The software is little clunky but does work fine. And I found no battery in the unit but powers up fine when plugged into the car. Some of the things I have used it for so far – 1) troubleshoot the transmission on my daughters 2000 Mazda 626, recorded the gear requested and actual gear. 2) Troubleshoot a bad wire on the Mass Air flow sensor on my friends Ford 500, recorded the MAF while driving. 3) Troubleshoot the air doors and the automatic transfer case on my 2004 Tahoe. 4) checked codes on 2006 impala SS. 5) Found the burned out light on a Dodge Ram pickup (Dodge has a message on the dash that tells the driver a light is out, doesn’t say which one but the scanner does tell which one).

That’s all for the information, Hope it can help you!

 /upload/service/16082573192112.jpg

Q: I have three questions on DS708:
The one I can remember at the moment is a 2008 Peugeot 407 1.6HDi, it would say, 'no communication with tester and vehicle' when I tried to reset the particle
filter and then give a list of things to do e.g. check wiring between the tester and the vehicle, check if ignition was etc... But those conditions had been met already,
otherwise it would say that all the time and not just for certain part of systems.
Just used it today on a 2004 peugeot 307 1.6HDi, it list the resetting of the airbag, but it says that it cannot communicate with ecuand to make sure the ignition is
on and thewiring is ok.Everything is ok but it won't communicate.

I tried to update the system and it wouldn't, so I registered it and tried again, still nothing. I made sure I had a good power supply and internet connection. Still it came up with
messages about unable to write to sd card and the sd card was in the machine properly. Please advice

A: 1) you say DS708 fail to reset the particle filter and reset the airbag.
DS708 not support resetting the particle filter and not support resetting of the airbag. DS708 mainly support: read and erase codes, ECU information, live data, custom list, active test, coding and adaptation.
2) As for DS708 register and update: please open DS708 user manual and turn to page 19, it lists 3 ways to register and step-by-step shows how to register.
