ICOM NEXT A+B+C Diagnostic Head Overview:
BMW Software Compatible with ICOM Next A:
Here is a detailed BMW ISTA Rheingold installation tutorial with full steps for sharing! If you are just beginner and not so familiar with ISTA, below part will surely help you out!
Note before reading:
BMW ISTA installation method may differ from source and version. This method is only for reference.
If you need tested working BMW ISTA software with installation tech support, you can check:
V2017.03 BMW ISTA 4.04.12 BMW ICOM software HDD WIN7
Step 1
Download and run unblock.reg BEFORE downloading anything else. Then REBOOT the computer, this is a critical step.
Install everything in Prerequisites folder, only if you don’t have a previous Rheingold installation. For 64-bit Windows, install both vcredist x32 & x64 from Microsoft, if not already installed.
Install the following – you can get both from Microsoft:
Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013
NET Framework 4.6
Step 2
Download Rheingold.7z using MegaSync or JDownloader. Once downloaded, check whether “Rheingold.7z” is blocked.
If it is, unblock it. Right click on the file, go to Properties and if files are blocked, then you will see the unblock button as in the picture below:
Extract Rheingold.7z using 7zip ONLY.
Location doesn’t matter, but preferred location is C:\.
If extracting to this location, you will need admin privileges for 7zip before extracting the file. To avoid future issues with admin rights etc. you can also extract this file to the root of a secondary drive, for e.g. D:\
Step 3
Create desktop shortcut from:
C:\Rheingold\TesterGUI\bin\Release\ISTAGUI.exe.
If not, create the shortcut from the location you extracted the files to.
Run the following registry files, depending from your OS:
Ista-prog-x64.reg
Ista-prog-x86.reg
Run the following registry fixes from the C:\Rheingold folder (scroll all the way to the bottom to see these files):
Step 4
Run ISTAGUI shortcut from your desktop as administrator.
When prompted for license, copy the license key from the “rheingold-license.txt” located in “C: \Rheingold”
If/When prompted for dealer ID, enter “1” and ignore following warnings. ISTA+ will close.
Run again ISTAGUI shortcut from your desktop as administrator and verify the databases in Settings > Version tab in ISTA/D.
If you encounter start/running issues, delete the “Rheingold” folder from “C:\”, run “RCleanerV4.4.exe” as administrator and start again from step 2.
Now you can use BMW ISTA diagnostic software!

Part 2: Programming with ISTA+
Programming fundamentals with ISTA+
NOTE: Programming with ISTA+ is only possible with a BMW ICOM and a 70+ amp rated Power Supply. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PROGRAM WITH ISTA+ WITHOUT THESE TWO ITEMS!
Programming can be accessed via the “Vehicle management” / “Software update” menu.
The planned actions are initially produced in the measures plan. The measures plan determined after the vehicle test can be done directly in the “Comfort” tab, or added to manually beforehand in the “Advanced” tab, then calculated and executed.
The car can be programmed to the latest I level using the comfort software update without any further actions based on the measures plan which has already been determined.
It is not possible to select additional actions manually in this menu.
Initializations and follow-up operations that might be required are automatically added during the measures plan calculation.
All other modes of programming and pre/post requirements are discussed in detail in the Help Document located at ~\Rheingold\Help folder.
Software update
Comfort – as per the suggested measures plan
Advanced – with broadened scope
Additional software (range of functions is not active yet)
Control unit replacement
Before exchange (preparation) – control unit read-out for the exchange
After exchange (subsequent evaluation) – control unit configuration after exchange

Here is the customer solution to BMW ICOM Next restore when you has red LEDs turn on issue when running firmware upgrade. In order to solve your incident, please apply the following steps:
Note: DO NOT UNPLUG the BMW ICOM Next emulator from the {OBD II} jack after an update via {ISTA}, a web interface or an emergency software update.
The {ICOM Next} starts with flashing green SYSTEM {LED}s. After about 10 seconds it shows red {LED}s for about 2 minutes. After this, the {ICOM Next} reboots due to a firmware update.
If the {ICOM Next} {LED}s remain red for more than 10 minutes, or if the {ICOM Next} is unplugged directly after an update, please carry out the following procedure:
1. Please ensure that ALL of the following prerequisites are satisfied:
1.1. You require a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 flash drive. {USB 1.x flash drives are not supported).
1.2. The USB flash drive must be formatted with a FAT32 file system.
1.3. A minimum of 60 MByte free space is required on the USB flash drive.
2. Navigate to “C:\ProgramData\BMW\ISPI\data\TRIC\ICOMNext\ICOM-Image-03-14-08”.
ProgramData folder is hidden by default. In that case, you have two options in order to access the file or the folder:
– change the settings directly in the Windows Explorer (“Tools => Folder Options => View => Show hidden files, folders or drives”)
– or enter the whole path into the Windows Explorer’s address bar and press enter.
3. Copy “{ICOM_Next-rootfs-010002.tar.gz}” to the root directory of the {USB} flash drive.
4. Copy “{ICOM_Next-app-010008.tar.gz}” to the root directory of the {USB} flash drive.
5. Disconnect the {ICOM Next} from the power supply.
6. Plug the {USB} flash drive into the {ICOM NEXT}.
7. Press and hold the button pressed on the {ICOM Next} and connect the {ICOM NEXT} to the {OBD II} jack of a vehicle.
8. Keep the button pressed. The {ICOM NEXT} starts with all {LED}s glowing red. The {LED}s stay red; some may flicker orange/yellow. Keep the button pressed.
9. Keep the button pressed. After about 4 seconds, all {LED}s turn orange/yellow. All {LED}s now glow in the same colour.
10. Release the button and then press it three times within five seconds. The {LED}s glow or flash red and orange/yellow again.
11. Wait: This procedure may take several minutes. Do not disconnect the {ICOM NEXT} as long as any {LED} glows red.
12. After about 5 minutes the SYSTEM {LED} turns green again. The {ICOM NEXT} has been updated and is ready for use.
IMPORTANT: When the software update is complete, the {ICOM NEXT} needs to be connected to the dealer’s network in order to be reconfigured.
All previous settings are lost during the update. If there is a “{user.settings}” file on the {USB} flash drive, it will be applied after the firmware update.
